CHRISTMAS MESSAGE 2009
Wayne Alcorn - Australian Christian Churches National President
For many people, 2009 may have been a tough year, but I believe it has caused some of us to emerge with clearer values and priorities by asking what are the important things in life.
There are questions people have begun to answer as they take stock and re-evaluate their lives. The Global Financial Crisis may have brought uncertainty, anxiety and fear, but in the midst of this, many are finding a sense of conviction, hope and faith.
A shift is taking place. There is a longing for simplicity and stability; for freedom from unrelenting pressure; and an appreciation of solid foundations and values to build our lives upon. Family is prized; relationships are being cherished. A spirit of goodwill prevails, as we rally to support each other through challenges and hardship. Instead of accumulating stuff for ourselves, people are digging deep to give to others.
As we begin to strip off the trappings and complications of an over-burdened life, we discover the heart of God towards us. “Do not be afraid, I bring you joyful news…” This simple reassurance, reflected in the words of the angel that first Christmas night, is valid for today.
It’s a message of hope as we emerge from a volatile year; a message of peace after a turbulent season. The birth of Jesus is a reminder of the real reason we celebrate Christmas: there is a God who loves us, His Church that supports and cares for us, and our faith in Him that sustains us through both the good and the bad times.
My prayer is that you go forward into 2010 without fear or uncertainty, but with faith, hope and peace in your heart.
